ZitatTo have a business rich in history is impressive; to have a solid business rich in history that has continued going strong for 170 years seems almost mythical in today's ever-changing world.

Skerbeck Entertainment Group is one such company. Based out of Escanaba, Michigan, the company operates six months out of the year and participates in events throughout Michigan, stopping along the way at some shows in Indiana as well as the Minnesota State Fair.

The company traces its roots back to Frank Skerbeck Sr., who owned a linen factory in Aussig, Bohemia. In 1853, he decided to trade in his factory for a small-scale circus, initiating the family's foray into the amusement world.

His son, Frank Jr., eventually moved to the United States and helped settle the railroad village of Dorchester, Wisconsin. Initially Frank Jr. tried his hand at farming, but ventured back into the realm of the circus. The Skerbeck family started out as circus performers, but soon realized that mechanical rides would be their next big thing after seeing a Ferris Wheel in 1893.

The current CEO and president is Jamie Skerbeck.
Jamie took over the business in 2014, when his father, Joe, retired. Skerbeck Entertainment Group is currently managed by the family's 6th generation.

The amusement company is known for being a great show with clean midways and friendly workers.

There are around 100 employees on staff, including several family members. These are Jamie and his wife, Sonja Skerbeck; his siblings Niki Skerbeck and Tory Burrows (and her husband John); their parents, Emeritus owners, Debra and Joseph Skerbeck; and several of the Skerbeck sibling's children.

Logan Burrows is the assistant game manager.

The midway features up to 30 rides, including as many as 14 kiddie rides at a given time. Some of the spectacular attractions include the Mulligan Giant Wheel, the Sea Ray, Zipper and the Supernova 360.

“In addition to the refurbishment of various rides, we recently have invested in an additional reefer trailer, and three new Gautier game concessions, including the long-range basketball, machine gun, and balloon pop,” shares Sonja Skerbeck.

A highlight of the carnival is a merry-go-round and there are also 18 game and four food concessions.

The company implements a business model that enables each part of the carnival – rides, games, concessions – to act as a mini-business of their own, which proves useful in situations such as when Covid-19 swept across the nation. This business model also helps keep down costs so the business can focus on other areas that may need more attention.

In a recent interview with FOCUS Magazine, a publication put out by the Small Business Association of Michigan, Jamie Skerbeck shared that the most challenging part of the business thus far has been the hiring process. Like many other companies in the industry, finding staff members who want to work 50 to 60 hours a week is nearly impossible as there continues to be a shortage of willing workers. Since Covid, many people also have issues interacting with the public. Most businesses in the carnival industry have consistently relied on the H-2B program and its “lottery” to bring in immigrant workers on visas.

“Though it can be helpful, the situation is dire when you lose the lottery due to the increased demand on the program,” shared Skerbeck. “In 2023, the odds of winning were less than 30 percent.”

What makes things even more difficult for carnival owners is the fact that lottery winners are not announced until the beginning of January, which means businesses are unfortunately unable to have a solid idea of who will be available for staff needs until weeks before the opening season begins.

Skerbeck added in the interview that being able to adapt in the business world is important for long-term survival. The family's motto is “The Show Must Go On,” and the goals for the company will continue to grow and evolve with each generation with that phrase in mind.

“Every time the family is presented with an obstacle, we've continued with the 'show must go on' and made strategic changes or pivoted to adapt to things outside our control,” said Skerbeck.

And it's a motto and plan that has proven fruitful for more than a century and a half.
